An example is the crustacean known as a copepod which comes in several species, is found in water all over the world and is perfectly harmless. But it is a distant cousin of the dreaded shrimp and lobster, molluscs whose consumption violates the biblical prohibition against eating aquatic creatures without fins and scales.

The ban only applies to species that can be seen with the naked eye – not, say, an amoeba – and the question of whether the copepod is in fact visible is central to the dispute. But it also said that the water should not be filtered on the Sabbath, because one of the 39 varieties of work forbidden by the sages includes the “sorting” or sifting of food, such as separating the wheat from the chaff or the raisins from the macaroni pudding.
